Interview process
If you are invited to interview, you will receive further information about the interview panel, the format of the interview and the timing of the assessment.
Interviews will normally take place at Thistle House in Edinburgh, although some competitions may be held at alternative locations. JABS will seek to accommodate reasonable preferences and requirements where possible, although this may not always be feasible.
The interview stage provides an opportunity for you to expand on the information contained in your application and demonstrate your suitability for appointment. The assessment will focus on the requirements of the role and the criteria for appointment.
Depending on the role, the interview process may include:
- a legal case study exercise (for court appointments)
- questions designed to assess your personal and judicial skills, knowledge and experience
- a presentation (for certain roles)
- specialist questions relating to the relevant tribunal chamber (for non-legal Tribunal roles)
- an opportunity for you to ask questions about the role or the process
Preparing for your Interview
There are a number of steps you can take to prepare for interview:
- Reread your application form
- Spend time ensuring you are familiar with the skills and qualities for the role you have applied for
- Identify examples from your past experience which you can use to demonstrate that you posses the relevant skills and qualities needed
- Consider how, if you lack direct experience, you can demonstrate to the panel that you have the potential to successfully fulfil the office you are interviewing for
- Anticipate questions the panel may ask, and
- Practice your responses.
- You are very welcome to take notes and a copy of your application form in to your interview.
- You are also very welcome to take a pen and some blank paper in to your interview. The panel would encourage you to briefly note down the question asked before considering the question and your response. This reduces the chance of you missing key words or phrases.
- Don't rush your response to the interview questions. Take a moment to properly consider the question and, if it is a competency based question, think of the best example you can give to demonstrate the criteria being explored in the question.
