Who We Are
There are currently 16 Board members, comprising eight legal/judicial members and eight lay members, including the Chairing Member, who is always a lay member.
The Chairing Member receives a fee of £379.92 per day. The other lay members and the legal members receive a fee of £320.85 per day. The judicial members do not receive any fees for work undertaken except for President May Dunsmuir who receives fees commensurate with her role as a Chamber President. All Board Members are eligible to claim for expenses incurred on Board business, based on Scottish Government Travel and Subsistence rules.
The Judiciary and Courts (Scotland) Act 2008 allows for Board Members to be appointed for a period of no more than four years; appointments can be renewed up to a maximum of 8 years.

Lay and Legal Appointment Advisors
The work done by JABS is supported by a number of Lay and Legal Appointment Advisors. As JABS workload increased, statutory provision was made in Section 13A of Schedule 1 of the Judiciary and Courts (Scotland) Act 2008 allowing the Board to appoint persons (other than Board members) to assist the Board in carrying out its functions.
JABS has appointed one Legal Appointments Advisor and four Lay Appointments Advisors. Both Lay and Legal Appointment Advisors receive a fee of £320.85 per day and are eligible to claim expenses incurred on Board business.
