Social Security Chamber Disability Member Recruitment – Information Webinar 5th April 2023

The Judicial Appointments Board for Scotland (JABS) invites applications from suitably qualified individuals who wish to be considered for appointment to the First-Tier Tribunal for Scotland, Social Security Chamber. 

The Social Security Chamber currently deals with appeals in connection with decisions and determinations in terms of sections 46 and 61 of the Social Security (Scotland) Act 2018. If successful, appointment will commence around October 2023 to allow training to take place in early 2024. You will not be asked to hear cases until April 2024.

The disability members are expected to ask questions about care needs and aids used by the appellant and may be asked whether the aids provided are those that might be expected for someone with the conditions claimed. The disability member would draw from their own experiences and expertise to provide the panel with crucial information which will have an impact on the overall outcome.

JABS is seeking a number of ordinary members with disability expertise to work in various locations across Scotland. The posts are part-time and paid on a daily fee basis. The ordinary members with disability experience daily fee is £256.58. There is a yearly commitment of 10-30 days.

Please note that you will be not entitled to a pension in respect of your office, and you are not entitled to any gratuity, allowance or compensation when your period in office ends (whatever the reason).

Additionally within this role you will  not have any entitlement to receive a guaranteed minimum amount of fees.

You are eligible for the role of ordinary member with disability experience if you are experienced in dealing with the needs of persons who have a disability within the meaning of section 6 of the Equality Act 2010 because the person works in a professional or voluntary capacity with a person with a disability, provides care to a person with a disability, or themselves has a disability.

Selection is made solely on merit. The Board welcomes applications from the widest possible range of eligible individuals including those from under-represented groups.
