Upcoming Competition

07 Oct 25

The Judicial Appointments Board for Scotland (JABS) is pleased to announce that, later in 2025, it will launch a competition to recommend suitably qualified individuals for appointment to the office of Senator of the College of Justice.

The competition will provide an opportunity for those aspiring to join Scotland’s highest courts. The Board is committed to an open and fair process where recommendation is made on merit.

Further details, including key dates, will be published in due course on the JABS website and through JABS social media channels. Potential applicants are encouraged to monitor updates and start to prepare now to participate in this important and challenging process.

To be eligible to apply for the Office of Senator, applicants must be either:

·         A Sheriff or Sheriff Principal who has exercised these functions continuously for a period of at least five years;

·         An Advocate of five years standing (note – there is no requirement for Advocates that they be one immediately prior to their application or that the five years standing be continuous);

·         A Solicitor who has had rights of audience before the Court of Session or the High Court of Justiciary continuously for a period of no less than five years; or

·         A Writer to the Signet of ten years standing who has passed the examination in civil law two years before taking up their seat on the Bench.

The Judicial Appointments Board for Scotland is committed to upholding high standards in judicial appointments and supporting the effective administration of justice in Scotland by working to ensure recommendations made are of the highest quality.
